Hardwood Floor Installation in Cle Elum

Solid or engineered hardwood, chosen for a house that goes from dry winter heat to damp spring thaw, acclimated properly and installed by our own crew.

Nothing feels like a real wood floor in a mountain house. It’s warm underfoot, it suits timber and log interiors, and a good one lasts for decades. But wood is still wood. It swells when the air is damp and shrinks when it’s dry, and a house in Cle Elum sees both: dry air with the heat running all winter, then damp shoulder seasons while the snow melts off.

Choosing and installing hardwood here is mostly about respecting that. Swiftwater Houseworks installs solid and engineered hardwood in Cle Elum homes, cabins and rentals with our own crew, and we’ll help you pick a floor that suits how your house is used.

Solid or engineered?

Solid hardwood is one piece of wood from top to bottom. It can be sanded and refinished many times over its life, and nothing else feels quite like it. It also moves the most as humidity changes, and it does best over a wood subfloor in a house that’s heated year-round.

Engineered hardwood is a real hardwood top layer bonded to a layered core that resists swelling and shrinking. It moves less, and depending on the product it can go places solid wood shouldn’t, like over concrete or in-floor heat. The trade-off is a thinner wear layer, so it can be refinished fewer times, and some products not at all.

For most cabins and second homes, engineered is the easier floor to live with. A house that sits cool for weeks and warms up fast every time you arrive is hard on solid wood. For a full-time home with steady heat and a wood subfloor, solid is a fine choice if it’s what you love.

Let the wood acclimate

Hardwood should spend time inside the house before it’s installed, at the temperature and humidity the house normally lives at. That lets the boards adjust before they’re fastened down. Skip it and you get gaps in February and cupped boards in May.

We follow the manufacturer’s guidance on acclimation and check moisture in the wood and the subfloor before we start. In a second home, that means the heat is on at normal living temperature before the flooring arrives, and it stays on through the install.

Finishes for second homes and rentals

The finish decides how a floor looks after a few seasons of real use.

  • Lower sheen hides more. Matte and satin finishes hide scratches, dust and grit. High gloss shows every paw print.
  • Texture helps. Wire-brushed or hand-scraped boards hide wear from dogs and ski boots.
  • Factory finishes save time. Prefinished boards arrive with a tough finish already on, so there’s no waiting on coats to cure after the install.
  • Protect the entries. Put tile or LVP where snow and grit come in, with the hardwood starting beyond it. Our flooring installation page covers those options.
  • Save a box. For a rental, order a little extra from the same batch so a damaged board can be replaced with one that matches.

Brandon & his team are fantastic. The crew is cheerful & personable. Many homes in our neighborhood use Swiftwater Earthworks for jobs large & small.

Not sure hardwood is the right call?

Common questions

Don't see yours? Call or text 509-260-3659, or send us a note.

Is hardwood a good idea in a cabin?

It can be, if you choose well. Engineered hardwood with a low-sheen or textured finish handles the humidity swings and traffic of a cabin far better than glossy solid wood.

How long does hardwood need to acclimate?

It depends on the product and the conditions in the house, so we follow the manufacturer's guidance. What matters most is that the house is at normal living temperature and humidity while the wood adjusts.

Can hardwood go in a kitchen or entry?

In a kitchen, yes, as long as spills get wiped up. At the main entry where snow and grit come in, tile or LVP usually works better, with the hardwood starting beyond it.

Can engineered hardwood be refinished?

Some can, depending on how thick the top wear layer is. Thicker wear layers can be sanded and refinished and thin ones can't, so check before you buy a floor you plan to keep a long time.
