Turf project
Suncadia Artificial Turf with a Natural Rock Surround
Beside a Suncadia pool patio, a fussy patch of lawn became artificial turf, edged with river rock, boulders and native beds so it belongs in the pines.
This elegant Suncadia home has a pool, a patio and a rustic setting under tall pines. What it didn’t need was a small patch of lawn that took constant work to keep perfect. So instead of fighting to keep that grass alive, we put in artificial turf and built a natural rock surround so it fits the setting.
Why turf made sense here
Keeping a small lawn perfect up here is harder than it sounds. Summers are dry, the growing season is short, and tall pines throw shade and drop needles. Next to a pool, where people walk barefoot and spend their summer afternoons, a struggling patch of grass shows every flaw.
Artificial turf stays green through a dry summer with very little water and no mowing. The trick is making it look like it belongs. A bright green rectangle dropped into a natural, wooded yard can look out of place fast.
The design
We blended the turf into the setting instead of setting it apart. River-rock borders run along the edges, so there’s no hard line where the turf stops and the woods begin. Boulders anchor the border beside the patio, and planted beds of native plants frame the turf and soften it into the pines.
The result reads as part of the landscape: green where you want to sit and walk, rock and natives where the yard meets the forest.
What it does now
The owners have an even, green space beside the pool all summer, without the watering and mowing a small lawn would demand. The rock and plantings tie it to the trees around it, so it looks planned from the start, because it was.
Turf works in other tough spots too: dog runs, play areas and shady corners where grass won’t take. Like every landscape design job, it starts with a walk around the property to see what the ground, the shade and the water are doing.
